What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine, as it is taught in Canada, is a distinct system of health care that addresses the whole body and focuses on treating the root cause of illness. It encompasses conventional diagnostic methods but has a broader range of treatment options than conventional medicine. Treatments cover a combination of herbal medicine, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition, physical medicine, massage, homeopathy, life style counselling, and hydrotherapy.
A Canadian trained Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.) is a primary health care practitioner; trained to be the doctor of alternative and complementary medicine. You may think of them as doctors for people who are interested in trying the many gentle, less invasive approaches that look to the root cause of maladies and seek to prevent or reduce the need for more invasive methods. This health care approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions. Naturopathic Doctors provide patients with a truly integrative form of health care.
Canadian Naturopathic Doctors receive the standard training in medical sciences, as well as, clinical and physical diagnosis, laboratory and diagnostic imaging, emergency medicine and pharmacology. They are also required to write North American naturopathic medical licensing exams that follow the same standards as the U.S. National Board of Medical Examiners (for the U.S. Medical Licensing Exams). Naturopathic Doctors also work with other medical professionals to provide you with the best care possible.
